Flowering Tree Lodge Drum Team
The FTL Drum Team gathers to drum and sing indigenous songs around a sacred ceremonial drum. The songs we sing have come from many sources, mostly as gifts from indigenous friends. Some are all vocables, while others contain some indigenous words. The traditional way with singing is to learn by doing, so come with an open heart and give it a try!
We welcome anyone to participate, learn, and enjoy the singing. In accordance with the Twisted Hair tradition of honoring the balance of feminine and masculine energies in the Universe, we welcome both women and men around the drum. No disrespect is intended to traditions in which women stand around the outside of men’s dance drums; it is understood that those traditions honor the feminine in a different way.
We gather monthly from January to August. The drum gatherings are open to all who are interested from January through June. However, in July drum practices are limited to those who have made the commitment to support our annual Eagle Dance ceremony in August. The drum team maintains continuous singing throughout the day long dance ceremony as the dancers dance their prayers to Spirit. The drum represents the heart of the dance, helping support the legs of the dancers. The exchange of energy catalyzes the gifts given by both the drummers and dancers, creating a very powerful ceremony.
